Aurora teen gets 35 years for gang slaying

An Aurora teenager convicted of acting as a lookout in a 2007 gang murder has been sent to prison for 35 years.

Edgar A. Sanchez, 17, was sentenced Thursday by Kane County Judge Allen M. Anderson. By statute, he must serve the entire term.

A jury convicted Sanchez of first-degree murder in October for his role in the slaying of 27-year-old Renee Saldana.

Prosecutors said Sanchez acted as a lookout as members of his street gang fired 11 rounds into Saldana's vehicle, striking him once and killing him. The shooting happened about 3 a.m. July 29, 2007, at Seventh Avenue and Hinman Street on the city's southeast side.

The sentence handed down this week includes a mandatory 15-year enhancement because a firearm was used to commit the murder, according to the state's attorney's office.

The case remains under investigation. To report information to police, call (630) 859-1700 or, to remain anonymous, (630) 892-1000.
