Kane County fugitive sought

Kane County sheriff's police are on the lookout for a fugitive with multiple arrest warrants who got away during a recent traffic stop.

Joseph M. Nathan, 19, address unknown, was pulled over at 7:17 p.m. Dec. 18 in Geneva Township after he was spotted driving without headlights, according to the sheriff's office. When the responding officer returned to his squad to run Nathan's name through a police database, Nathan got out of the vehicle and took off running west.

After a brief foot chase turned up empty, the officer returned to the vehicle Nathan was driving and interviewed a passenger who said she had just met Nathan and knew little about him. She told police he was driving her mother's car because she couldn't drive due to a leg cramp.

Later, police began following a set of footprints from the snowy scene at Fargo Boulevard and Bent Tree Drive. The tracks led through a nearby residence and ended at a drive where the vehicle from the traffic stop and the female passenger were found, police said. Again, the passenger told police she had only recently met Nathan and did not know his whereabouts.

Kane County Sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler said Tuesday that Nathan is wanted on warrants for forgery, theft, drug paraphernalia possession, marijuana possession and property damage. Additional charges of driving without headlights, driving without a valid license, no insurance and obstructing justice are pending.
