Arlington Heights bank robbed

A man wearing a ski mask and a plaid sports coat robbed the Peoples' Bank of Arlington Heights about 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to FBI officials.

The office that was robbed is located at 1104 S. Arlington Heights Road. Peoples' Bank has another branch at 10 S. Vail Ave.

A white male walked into the bank, showed a teller a black handgun and demanded money, said Cynthia Yates, an FBI spokeswoman.

"He then fled in an unknown direction with an undetermined amount of cash," Yates said.

The man wore a black ski mask, a brown scarf and a black-and-white-plaid sports coat, according to Yates. He is described as having a medium build and being about 5-feet-7-inches tall, she said.

The bank robbery follows two other recent attempts in Arlington Heights.

Arlington Heights police arrested a 23-year-old homeless man and charged him with the Dec. 3 robbery of the Chase Bank at 43 E. Golf Road in Arlington Heights after a plainclothes officer found a man matching the description of the robber within a half-hour still in the neighborhood. Police said about $6,000 was taken in the robbery.

And on Nov. 5, there was an attempted armed robbery at Ben Franklin Bank, 830 E. Kensington Road.

Frank Appleby, Peoples' bank president, said he was proud of how his employees handled the situation.

"All I can say is that our people followed proper procedure and no one was hurt," Appleby said Wednesday.
