No. 20 Virginia beats Illinois 63-39

CHAMPAIGN -- Monica Wright scored 23 points to lead No. 20 Virginia past Illinois, 63-39, at the second annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Thursday night.

Ariana Moorer had her first career double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Cavaliers (6-2), while Aisha Mohammed scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Wright scored 12 of her 23 points in the first half to help boost the Cavaliers to a 40-14 lead at the break.

Jenna Smith scored 14 points and had five rebounds for Illinois (3-5). Lacey Simpson, with 10 points, was the only other Illini in double digits.

The Cavaliers were more successful from the free throw line, going 13-for-18, compared with 7-for-12 for the Illini.

Both teams struggled from 3-point range, with Virginia going just 2-for-14 and Illinois making just two of 12.

Virginia improved to 4-0 in its series against Illinois.
