Wheeling tax levy hike approved

The Wheeling village board on Monday approved a 6.25 percent increase in the tax levy for the 2008 tax bill.

For residents with a total bill between $3,000 and $6,000, the increase would be between $17.21 and $34.43.

The village also approved its budget, which reflected a $1.57 million deficit.

That deficit was pared from earlier in the year after the board decided not to fill vacancies from retirements in the police, fire and public works departments as well as cutting out the annual Freedom Fest.
