Trial set for Geneva sisters accused in mom's death

Two Geneva sisters accused of neglect in the death of their 84-year-old mother are scheduled to stand trial together in March.

Jill Barry, 47, and Julie Barry, 54, have opted for a bench trial before Kane County Judge Allen M. Anderson. He set the matter Friday for March 12 and 13.

The sisters each face two counts of criminal neglect of an elderly person in the death of their mother, Mary Virginia Barry, last year.

Authorities said they found the elderly woman covered in ants and lying on urine-soaked sheets April 27 in a family home on the 400 block of Peyton Street. She died a week later from complications of pneumonia, bladder cancer, dehydration and malnutrition.

In January, the Barry sisters pleaded not guilty to the charges. They have said under oath that they bathed their mother regularly and never noticed unusual sores or odors.

The defendants remain free on $10,000 bond.
