Two hospitalized after three-car collision in South Elgin
Two women injured in a Sunday morning crash in South Elgin remain hospitalized, one in critical condition, authorities said Monday.
Angelina Cuerto, 48, of Carpentersville, was flown from the crash scene to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where she is listed in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Johanna Barba, 21, of Plainfield, is in fair condition at Sherman Hospital in Elgin, according to a spokesman there.
The drivers were involved in a three-car crash at 12:18 a.m. Sunday on Route 25, just north of Middle Street.
According to witnesses, Barba lost control of her 1999 Cadillac sedan in the snow and ice, ramming into Cuerto's 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier, South Elgin police Sgt. Mike Doty said.
Personnel from the South Elgin Fire Protection District extricated both women from their vehicles.
A third car was struck during the crash, and the two men inside -- a 23-year-old Batavia driver and his 24-year-old passenger -- were treated at the scene, police said.
Doty said the crash remains under investigation and it is too soon to tell whether drugs or alcohol played a role.
South Elgin police and fire, the Kane County Emergency Management Agency and the Bartlett Police Department and fire protection district assisted at the scene.
