Facts dispute writer's view of history

I was quite amused by the letter of Raymond Kohn (Nov. 21). He attributes all that is good in the United States to the Republican Party, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Too bad he doesn't know his history.

The Civil war was originally started due to states rights issues, not slavery. It is a great and good thing that from that war the Emancipation Proclamation evolved. President Eisenhower was very angry when the Supreme Court, led by his appointee, Chief Judge Earl Warren, struck down segregation in Little Rock, Ark., in 1957. If Martin Luther King was a Republican, why hasn't the Republican Party loudly proclaimed this throughout the land? Wouldn't that be of benefit to them? We got a boatload of information about Sarah Palin's $150,000 shopping spree, but nary a word that the man who gave his life to end segregation, voted Republican. And if King had felt this was important, wouldn't he have made it public? Maybe he thought it wasn't anybody's business, since he wasn't running for office.

There are good people throughout this land, Democrats, Republicans and Independents alike. There are so many difficult issues to be resolved (mostly created by the current administration) we had better all work together or we'll all sink together.
