LGBTQ accomplishments deserve attention

Just read the views of Sara Schmidt about "Teaching LGBTQ influence in history," and what I garnered from her is that being gay has nothing to do with their accomplishments. It was their innate talents and ability that got them to the top, so they don't deserve celebration.

What she completely misses is how many obstacles they had to endure to succeed. Obstacles that we "proper" people never had to endure. How many talented, intelligent people were lobotomized to "cure" them of their "affliction" of being gay? Has anyone ever heard of an incident where a talented, smart person was lobotomized for being "straight"? Did Ellen DeGeneres not lose a show because of her sexuality? Was she less talented at that time? I think not. We could go on and on, to what purpose?

For me, and hopefully, for the majority of Daily Herald readers, I think it is very commendable that gay people are finally being celebrated and acknowledged for their accomplishments, in spite of having to overcome the "stigma" of being gay.

Keep up the good work, Daily Herald.
