Home rule defeated in Prospect Heights
In unofficial vote totals, home rule in Prospect Heights was defeated by a solid majority on Tuesday.
With 13 of 17 precincts counted, 1,540 "yes" votes were cast, which was almost 40 percent, while about 60 percent, or 2,326 votes, were against it.
It was a repeat of 2004 when the city had tried to pass home rule but failed by nearly a 2-to-1 ratio.
Although the city had failed before, officials thought the issue was more dire and residents would be more likely to vote for it this time.
A recent city report had indicated that half of the roads maintained by the city were in serious need of repair. The city doesn't take in enough money to repair all the streets in a timely fashion, city officials said.
