Local salons offer free haircuts for cancer survivors Dec. 2

Cancer survivors will be able to receive free haircuts on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at three local Great Clips salons.

The haircuts will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Great Clips in the Otter Creek Shopping Center at 246 S. Randall Road in Elgin, at Great Clips in Silver Glen Crossing at 626 Randall Road in South Elgin, and at the salon in Rose Plaza at 1770 S. Randall Road in Geneva.

"We're really excited to be doing this," said Renee Giorno, general manager of the three locations. "It's our way of letting cancer survivors know that we're here for them. We want them to look good for the holidays and to feel special."

Giorno said the invitation is also open to those who have lost their hair after undergoing chemotherapy.

"We'll do a scalp massage." she said.

Great Clips is participating in the national Cancer Survivor Beauty and Support Day which many salons and cosmetology schools observe. The day has special meaning for Giorno.

"My mother and father survived cancer," she said. "And one of my employees whom I have worked with for 16 years has just survived breast cancer."

Giorno is also offering free haircuts for mothers or children who are clients of the Life Center in Elgin, a pregnancy support agency. Vouchers for haircuts are available through the Life Center.

For information, call the Elgin Great Clips at (847) 695-3991, the South Elgin salon at (847) 214-9080 or the Geneva salon at (630) 262-0898.
