Where's the money coming from?

I have recently lived in Kankakee for the last 13 months, and have since moved back from there to my residence in Wheeling.

There are two very disturbing things I have noticed over the last couple of months:

• The pedestrian bridge is closed over Dundee Road. Why? I was walking past there one morning, and the engineers were checking the stairways to see if the concrete cured/set properly.

I understand the safety of the bridge starts with the steps, but wasn't the bridge shut down for several months four years ago while it was rebuilt? Why weren't the stairs rebuilt when they had it shut down in the first place?

We are putting our children in harm's way, as well as other pedestrians trying to cross Dundee Road. The speed limit there is 35 mph, but it is common practice to travel 40-45 miles an hour, including Wheeling's work vehicles.

• I know Wheeling needed a new village hall. But Wheeling OWNS the Old Kmart property on the northwest corner of Dundee and Elmhurst roads. I guess instead of building there, they had the extra tax dollars to build a brand-new building next to the old Wickes, and keep the toilet known as the old Kmart!

Wake up, people! Our taxes are too high anyway, and we are in a recession. How about saving money, rather than throw it away, and raise taxes?
