Elgin Area School District U-46 news

Here is what's in the news for the week of Nov. 3-8 at Elgin Area Unit District 46 schools. For details, visit u-46.org.

Board meeting

• On Monday, the board of education meets at 7 p.m. in Room 140 at the Educational Services Center, 355 E. Chicago Street in Elgin. The public is welcome to attend and provide citizen comments to the school board at the open meetings. For more information on the board, visit the "School Board & Community" link on the district Web site at u-46.org.

Bartlett High

• On Tuesday, young adult author Chris Crutcher will speak to multiple classes in the Bartlett High School auditorium about his experiences. He also will be working one-on-one with students in a Creative Writing Workshop.

• On Thursday, the school will hold their first-ever Book Fair benefiting the school library.

South Elgin High

• On Tuesday, the South Elgin High School library will be hosting two of the five visiting authors for the 2008 District Author Festival. Young adult author Chris Crutcher will speak in the auditorium at 7:40 a.m. with participating freshman English classes. Jill Thompson, graphic novel author, will visit with some of the high school art students.

• On Friday and Saturday, selected students will present the play "Charlotte's Web" at 7 p.m. with an additional 2 p.m. performance on Saturday. Tickets are $8 per adult; $6 per students and senior citizens.

Tefft

• On Thursday and Friday, "An Evening of One-Act Plays" will be presented at 7 p.m. at Tefft Middle School. Tickets will be sold at the door for $4 per adult and $3 per student.

Laurel Hill

• On Monday, parents, students and friends are invited to the Poplar Creek Library located at 490 S. Bartlett Road in Streamwood for the Laurel Hill Elementary School Student Art Show. The art work is on display all day.

• On Tuesday, the Student Council Election Day will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. in the Learning Center. Teachers Jacqueline Rizzo, Tara Sansone and Kurt Preble along with the sixth-grade students have researched campaign strategies, voting rules, regulations and process. The students also held a mock debate.

• On Thursday, an ELL/Bilingual Parenting Class will be taught from 9:45 to 11 a.m. in the new conference room of the school. All classes are free, taught in Spanish and child care is available. The parenting class will be taught by staff from Hanover Township Youth and Family Services and Laurel Hill School. Parents please come join us and learn ways to prepare your child to succeed in school, positive behavior, reinforce academic skills and ways to help your child with homework. Liberty

• On Monday, children's author Jim Aylesworth will present a family assembly at 7 p.m. in the Liberty Elementary school gym.

• On Thursday, second-grade students will attend "Charlotte's Web" at South Elgin High School.

Lincoln

• On Thursday, Lincoln Elementary School will host a Latin Music Festival from 6 to 8 p.m. A Puerto Rican musical group called Johnny Rumba will perform. They are going to play their own musical instruments and they are going to dance too. For Spain, there is going to be a guitarist only playing Spanish music. For Mexico, there is going to be another guitarist playing the guitar and singing Mexican songs. The rest of the music is with CDs. The students from kindergarten, first, third, fifth and two from sixth grade are going to be dancing representative music from these countries. Most of the grades will be presenting decorations from each country.

Parkwood

• On Thursday, the Chicago Storm Soccer Team will present an assembly to speak with Parkwood Elementary students about making good choices and staying in school to reach their goals. Students who meet behavior expectations outlined in the Positive Behavioral Intervention & Supports program will be invited to attend a Storm game in February.

Washington

• On Friday, the Washington Elementary School PTA will sponsor Harvest Family Night from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the school. There will be games, food and a DJ.
