Meeks to lead school funding protest Friday
State Sen. James Meeks has announced plans for a school funding protest along Chicago's Michigan Avenue on the biggest shopping day of the year.
Protesters are set to begin outside Water Tower Place on Friday and hand out fliers about the state's school financing system. Meeks has called for an overhaul of that system, which he says unfairly favors wealthy school districts.
In September, Meeks led a two-day boycott of Chicago Public Schools to draw attention to the situation. A month later he staged a protest outside the first Chicago Cubs playoff game.
Meeks also raised the issue at a breakfast attended by the chief organizer of Chicago's bid for the 2016 Olympic Games.
