Voters repudiated malicious politics

We have just completed a monumentally difficult electoral cycle.

The issues were complex and daunting, and the stakes potentially enormous.

Yet, in our local races for Congress, state representative and county board commissioner, we witnessed some of the most vacuous, negative and malicious campaigns by challengers in memory.

It seemed as if a fair examination of issues, qualifications and experience, along with any semblance of integrity and decency, had been replaced by fraudulent testimonials, distortions and innuendo.

It is a credit to the sophistication of the voters in our community that vile campaign tactics and dishonesty were not rewarded.

Despite the avalanche of malicious attacks from challengers, the people of our community re-elected decent and hard-working public servants to represent us.

They are each experienced leaders with bonafide records of dedicated service and accomplishment and we can be confident that they will continue to represent our community's interests with integrity.

Now that the election is over, it is time to move forward and for all of us to work together with the officials we elected.

Congratulations to the voters who rose above putrid politics and sent a strong message that the ends do not justify the means, and that lies, deceit and misrepresentations are no way to run for office.

We, the people, deserve better than that from candidates who want to represent us.
