Bailout, energy plan must work in sync
Does it make sense to run to the rescue of the Detroit Big Three automakers while California Democrat Henry Waxman plans to stage a coup to oust fellow House Democrat John Dingell from the chairmanship of the House Energy and Commerce Committee? Rep. Dingell's transgression? As chairman his committee has attempted to write energy policy that is realistic, industry-friendly, achievable and contains costs. And Mr. Dingell happens to be a House member from the state of Michigan, home to the Big Three. To the likes of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Mr. Waxman the goals establishing cost-effective environmentally friendly policy is heresy.
Speaker Pelosi is in full agreement with Mr. Waxman's wish to see carbon emissions reduced 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050 (Source: Wall Street Journal). House Democrats are in full throttle to "rescue" the Big Three while at the same time looking to enact draconian environmental regulations that would only hasten the demise of the Big Three. The $50 billion in total Big Three bailout monies would be a mere drop of oil in the crankcase if Detroit was compelled to produce the cars necessary to meet the environmental demands of Speaker Pelosi and Rep. Waxman.
