Briefs: Round Lake chamber to hold food drive

The Round Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a food drive to help the Round Lake Area Avon Food Pantry. Individuals can drop off donations at the chamber office in the Round Lake Beach Cultural and Civic Center, 2007 Civic Center Way. Or make a $5 donation to the chamber office, and the chamber will purchase canned goods and donate them to the food pantry in the donor's name. Monetary donations can be mailed to the chamber office. The goal is to donate 1,000 nonperishable food items to help the pantry get through the holiday season.

Harbor cleanup meeting

A public meeting on the proposed cleanup of Waukegan Harbor is set for 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Waukegan Park District's Jane Addams Center, 95 Jack Benny Drive, Waukegan. The federal Environmental Protection Agency will present the proposed cleanup plan, and participants will be able to comment for the record. Written comments can also be submitted. The proposal is to dredge contaminated sediment from the harbor and store it in a special containment area on the former Outboard Marine Corp. Plant 2 site.

Talk on special ed advocacy

Special Education Advocate Jean Kulczyk will address the role of special education advocacy at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at Community Church of Barrington, 301 E. Lincoln, Barrington. The talk will address when one needs an advocate, the role of the parent as advocate, how an advocate is different from an attorney and some advocacy skills. Other topics to be discussed include how to work with an IEP team and an attorney and how to avoid unnecessary unpleasantness in the area of special education. The free event will also include a list of resources for parents to educate themselves with regard to state and federal laws and other special education matters. Her Web site is baspecialvoices.org.

Chihuahua-snatching in Buffalo Grove

A Chihuahua was carried away by coyotes in Buffalo Grove Monday evening. Police said a resident on Blackthorn Drive reported she let the dog outside into her unfenced yard without a leash just before midnight. She said a pack of wolves snatched the Chihuahua and ran off, but officers said the animals were likely coyotes.
