Whooping cough cases up

The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center is alerting the medical community and public about an increase in pertussis cases, aka whooping cough, in Lake County. As of Nov. 20, health officials reported 82 confirmed and probable cases this year, with the majority of them occurring in children 5-11 years old. Pertussis is a highly contagious illness that can affect anyone. In recent years there has been an increase in pertussis in adolescents and young adults nationwide. Most of these cases have occurred in previously immunized people, indicating that over time, a vaccine becomes less effective. For vaccinations, call your health care provider or the health department's immunization program at (847) 377- 8470.
