Aurora man charged in Batavia purse snatching

An Aurora man was charged with burglary Monday after snatching a woman's purse while the two were riding in a car, Batavia police said.

Jonathan Chatman, 28, is accused of committing the theft after getting into an argument with a 20-year-old woman as she was driving him to Batavia. The woman stopped the vehicle at Randall Road and Main Street about 11:40 a.m., at which point Chatman snatched the purse and fled on foot, police said.

A state trooper happened to be in the vicinity and immediately began searching the area. Chatman was apprehended at a nearby business, police said. Chatman was charged with felony burglary and misdemeanor theft.

If convicted of the most serious crime, he faces up to seven years in prison.
