Wouldn't that look great on the wall?

One theory is that a bad economy means we won't spend money on things like designer clothes, but sprucing up our homes might still be a priority. After all, if we're cutting back on going out and instead spend a lot of time at home and having folks over, we want it to look nice, right?

While the high-fashion looks that march down the runways might not find their ways to our backs, they could end up on our walls.

That's the theory of the Wallcoverings Association.

This is a lacy cutout called Flower Power Stripe from Seabrook available in this dramatic color combination as well as white on orange and a few more subtle ones like white on white and white on sage. Visit seabrookwallpaper.com.

Other choices involve wild flowers and stripes, wrinkles and pleats. For haute couture looks, stop in at yorkwall.com or ronaldreddingdesigns.com.

First you need light, then start cooking

Speaking of having folks over, that time of year is getting close. We need to get ready for holiday entertaining, and chances are it will be a while before your deck or patio will be ready for guests again.

One store where you can quickly pick up something that your home really needs is IKEA.

We like this pendant lamp called Foto. For $20 you get lacquered aluminum with a 15-inch diameter.

IKEA sees Foto over your dining room table. But how about hanging three of them above a kitchen island?

Here's the Wright way to enjoy Spring

May 16 seems a long time away, but we know there are people who plan their schedule around Wright Plus.

That's when homeowners in Oak Park or River Forest open their homes to visitors.

This year there will be three houses designed by Wright, two by contemporaries Tallmadge & Watson, and one each by E.E. Roberts and George W. Maher.

Tickets are $95, while members of the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust pay $80 each. The trust benefits from the event.

For a few months tickets will only be available online at GoWright.org. They will be sold by phone after Jan. 6 at (877) 848-3559.

Extras are also available the same weekend, including dinners in Wright homes.
