16-year-old fatally shot during fight at Elgin party

Elgin police are investigating the shooting death of a 16-year-old male a block from a party on Douglas Avenue where a fight had broken out Friday night.

Police responded to a report of a fight at a large party in the 500 block of Douglas at 11:28 p.m. Friday, according to a press release.

Calls to police indicated that a fight had broken out and shots had been fired outside the home and that a victim was on the ground.

Officers found a 16-year-old Elgin male a block from the party. He was taken to Sherman Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound.

A second victim, a 19-year-old male from Elgin, went to the hospital on his own with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was treated and released from the hospital and his injury is not considered life threatening, police said.

Elgin police canvassed the neighorhood and the party in search of witnesses. The Elgin Police Major Investigations and Gang Crimes Unit are investigating a possible gang motivation in the shootings, police said.

The victims names have not been made public.
