Elgin Area Unit District 46 news

Here is what's in the news for the week of Nov. 10-15 at Elgin Area Unit District 46 schools. For details, visit u-46.org.

School holiday

• On Tuesday, all offices and schools will be closed in observance of Veteran's Day.

Elgin High

• On Thursday, the choral department will present its first concert at 7 p.m. in the auditorium, 1200 Maroon Drive. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for students.

Larkin High

• On Friday and Saturday, the production "The Black Girl with the Lantern" will be presented at 7 p.m. in the auditorium, 1475 Larkin Ave., Elgin. It was translated and adapted for black-light theater by Eduardo Hernandez, Larkin drama teacher and director. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens. They can be purchased at the door or in the LHS treasurer's office.

South Elgin High

• On Thursday, a choral concert will be presented at 7 p.m. in the auditorium, 760 E. Main St.

Abbott

• On Monday, students who are on the Honor Roll or Top 10 percent for the first nine week grading period will be treated to Honors Fun Night from 6 to 8 p.m. Basketball, volleyball and Ping-Pong will be available, along with light refreshments.

Ellis

• On Thursday, an Honor Roll Breakfast will be held in the cafeteria at 7:30 a.m. First quarter honor roll students are invited along with their parents to breakfast served by the staff at Ellis.

Laurel Hill

• On Monday, parents are invited to attend the Awards Assembly at 8:15 a.m. in the multipurpose room. Students in fourth to sixth grade will receive academic and attendance awards for the first quarter.

• On Thursday, an ELL/Bilingual Parenting Class will be taught from 9:45 to 11 a.m. in the new conference room of the school. All classes are free, taught in Spanish and child care is available. The parenting class will be taught by staff from Hanover Township Youth and Family Services and Laurel Hill School. Parents, please come and learn ways to prepare your child to succeed in school, positive behavior, reinforce academic skills and ways to help your child with homework. • On Thursday, Family Math Night will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. throughout the school. Students and their families will participate in fun learning activities involving math. There will be games, raffles and prizes.

Parkwood

• On Thursday, families are invited to attend Literacy Night at 6 p.m. There will be student presentations, fall bingo, and fun family reading activities.

Sheridan

• On Wednesday, students in kindergarten to second grade and sixth grade will perform a choral concert at the school at 6:30 p.m.

• On Thursday, students in third to fifth grade will perform a choral concert at the school at 6:45 p.m.

Spring Trail

• On Monday through Thursday, the Scholastic Book Fair will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the gym. On Wednesday, hours will be extended from 4-8 p.m., and on Thursday, from 3 to 7 p.m.
