Dundee-Crown student punched, kicked in head dozens of times

A 17-year-old Dundee-Crown High School student was punched and kicked in the head at least 35 times Wednesday morning after the student charged in the attack said he gave him a dirty look, police said.

Juan Cárdenas, 17, of 2049 Berkshire Circle, Apt. D, Carpentersville, was arrested at the school Thursday and was charged in court Friday with felony aggravated battery and misdemeanor battery, according to court reports.

The beating was captured on the school's surveillance cameras.

Cárdenas told police that the victim, also a 17-year-old from Carpentersville, had "mad dogged" him.

According to a police account, Cárdenas punched the victim in the face and the victim fell to the floor.

Cárdenas later told police he punched the teen more than 30 times in the face and then kicked him five times in the head while he was on the ground.

The victim didn't fight back; he told police he "blacked out" with the first blow and when he gained consciousness, it was all over.

Cárdenas was asked by police how he knew if the victim was alive while he was hitting and kicking him.

He replied that he did not know if the victim was alive or dead, according to court records.

The victim was taken to a local health care facility for bumps and scrapes. His condition was not available Friday.

Cárdenas posted a $1,000 bond Friday morning and was released from the Carpentersville lockup.

His next court date is on Dec. 5 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
