Aurora man arrested in Hanover Park slaying
A 23-year-old Aurora man has been arrested after authorities say he shot and killed an Elgin woman Tuesday night outside a Hanover Park strip mall.
Sergio Hernandez, of 559 High St., Aurora, will be charged with first degree murder and appear today at a bond hearing in Rolling Meadows, authorities said.
Few details are being released, but Hernandez and Munez-Ramos, 26, were in a relationship at one time, Hanover Park Deputy Police Chief David Webb said Friday.
He added that there's no connection between this murder and the stabbing death of Vatsala Thakkar five days earlier outside another Hanover Park strip mall.
One man and two teens were charged with armed robbery and first-degree murder after authorities said they stole $135 and repeatedly stabbed the 56-year-old grandmother as she worked at a dollar discount store.
"Investigators from Hanover Park and MCAT (the Major Case Assistance Team) have worked relentlessly," said Webb. "Their efforts have brought quick closure to a terrible crime and put a community at ease."
Police said Munez-Ramos died of a single gunshot wound to the head outside the Park Place strip mall on the 1800 block of Irving Park Road.
Business owners said she was a hairstylist at Elvira's Beauty Salon and was shot after locking up for the night.
The shooting happened at 8:30 p.m., about 90 minutes after the start of a vigil held to remember Thakkar, who was killed less than three miles away.
