Briefs: Roadside check in Geneva

The state police and the Geneva Police Department will conduct a joint roadside safety check tonight, according to state police District 2 commander Captain Jeff Hedrich. The safety check is part of the "You Drink and Drive, You Lose" Campaign and is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Election hotline

An election complaint hotline has been created for Kane County voters who observe or experience problems voting on Election Day. The hotline, (630) 208-5328, will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Questions about polling times and places still should be directed to the Kane County Clerk's Election Help Line, (630) 232-5990.

City offers free light bulbs

Aurora residents can receive free, compact, fluorescent light bulbs while supplies last by stopping by city hall, 44 E. Downer Place, or the Customer Service Center/Fire Station 8, 3770 McCoy Drive. Senior citizens 65 and older can pick up five bulbs. Other residents will receive one bulb. Recipients should bring proof of residency. The bulbs were made available through a grant from the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus. Call (630) 264-4636.

Donate hearing aids

The Geneva Lions Club recycles hearing aids for refurbishment. To donate, drop off in one of 20 eyeglass/hearing aid boxes throughout Geneva and St. Charles. For box locations, visit genevalionsclub.org.

Legion photos sought

The Batavia American Legion Post 504 is looking for the public's help in updating its history files. It seeks names and photos of past commanders from 1974 to 1982. It also wants photos of past commanders James Sykora, Glenn S. Crane, Edmund T Lally, Carl L. Christensen, Eugene L. Benson, Adelbert Leifheit and Merrill R. Benson. Hispanic applicants sought

Aurora's Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board is seeking applicants from the 2009 Hispanic Youth Leadership and Service Scholarship for high school seniors and higher learning students ages 18 to 21. Scholarships are in the areas of Leadership in the School Community, Leadership in the Aurora Community and Leadership/Excellence in Academics. Applicants must live in Aurora and be of Hispanic descent. For applications, call the Mayor's Office of Special Events at (630) 844-4731 or download them from the city's Web site at aurora-il.org.
