Briefs: Gifts for service personnel
Aurora will send gifts to city residents in active military service who are stationed in the United States or overseas. Service personnel will receive a one-pound box of mixed nuts and a card in time for the holidays. The mixed nuts are provided by the Kiwanis Club of Aurora. Names and mailing address of Aurora citizens in active service can be phoned to the Mayor's Office of Special Events at (630) 844-4731 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Today is the deadline.
Family Reading Night
The Kane County Law Library and Self-Help Legal Center will have its 11th Annual Family Reading Night from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Kane County Judicial Center, 37W777 Route 38, St. Charles. Judges William Brady, Kevin Busch and Tom Stanfa will read bedtime stories at the free pajama-style party, which is for children through 2nd grade. Participants also can tour a courtroom and sit in a judge's chair. Youngsters must be accompanied by an adult. Call (630) 406-7126.
Liquor violation charged
The Red Lobster restaurant at Geneva Commons shopping center has been accused of selling liquor to two underage women Oct. 30. The two, working for the Geneva Police Department, were served at 8:51 p.m. Mayor Kevin Burns, who is also the liquor commissioner, will conduct a hearing into the matter at 4 p.m. Dec. 12 at City Hall, 109 James St.
New Holmstad building
The Holmstad retirement center will host a grand opening dedication of its new mixed-use Town Center, a 138,000-square-foot building that will serve as the community's center of activity, at 1 p.m. Friday at 700 W. Fabyan Parkway, Batavia.
Diversity business fair
The Quad County African-American Chamber of Commerce will sponsor its 2008 Diversity Business Fair from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Dec. 3 at Hollywood Casino, 49 W. Galena Blvd., Aurora. Featuring an exhibit and trade show area, the goal is to provide minority- and women-owned businesses with an opportunity to showcase their products and services to purchasing agents from area casinos, businesses, business resource organizations and other minority business owners in the Chicago metro area.
