Briefs: Alderman not running

Batavia Ald. Jodie Wollnik is not seeking re-election to her 1st Ward seat. Wollnik, whose term expires in April, said she wants to spend more time with her family. She has served on the council since October of 2003, when she was appointed to fill the term of an alderman who resigned.

Barsanti honored

Kane County State's Attorney John Barsanti was honored Friday with the Illinois Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving's first Friend of MADD award. Susan McKeigue, executive director of the MADD chapter, said the award was created to specifically recognize recent programs in Kane County to curb drunken driving. In a statement, Barsanti said, "It is gratifying to be recognized for our initiatives in the DUI area, but an impact on the issue is our aim."

Sugar Grove sewer testing

The Village of Sugar Grove is conducting inflow and infiltration testing of the sanitary sewers in the Black Walnut Trails and Windstone subdivisions Thursday through Oct. 31. The testing uses smoke to identify potential sources of stormwater inflow and infiltration into the sewer system. Testing will be done in sections and residents will be notified two days before testing through notices hung on door knobs. During the testing, residents might see smoke coming from vent stacks on buildings and from holes in the ground. The smoke is nontoxic and does not create a fire hazard. On the testing date, water should be poured down all drains in the home to ensure that traps are full and to prevent smoke from entering the home through the drains. If an invalid or elderly person will be home alone during testing, or if any resident has respiratory problems, call the Sugar Grove Public Works Department at (630) 466-7508.

Waubonsee parents night

Waubonsee Community College is hosting its first parents night from 6 to 8 tonight in the Event Room of the Academic and Professional Center on the college's Sugar Grove Campus, Route 47 at Waubonsee Drive. Parents of current high school students are invited to attend this free event that will feature speakers, campus tours, refreshments and a raffle for a $100 gift card. 'Get the facts' on voting:

The Batavia Park District will offer a "Get the facts" presentation at 7 tonight at the Civic Center, 327 W. Wilson St. On Nov. 4, voters will be asked to approve a bond issue for construction of a community recreation and aquatics center, including improvements to Quarry Beach. Aurora burglary spree

Aurora police are asking residents in a small area on the city's west side to help combat a string of burglaries that began in July and has continued this month. Police late last week said 29 houses have been burglarized in an area roughly bounded by Sullivan Road on the north, Illinois Avenue on the south, Edgelawn Drive on the west and Highland Avenue on the east. Police said they believe the same burglars are responsible for many of the break-ins, most of which have occurred during the day. Investigators said they have few leads.
