Man kills self after accidentally shooting brother

Chicago police say they are investigating the apparent suicide of a 28-year-old man who reportedly shot himself after accidentally shooting his 18-year-old brother in the head.

Police said in a statement early Monday that the brothers were walking on West 71st St. about midnight when they older brother attempted to shoot a dog. The bullet struck the younger brother instead.

The older brother fled in a car and was stopped by police. As officers approached the vehicle, the man put a gun to his head and fired. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office says he was pronounced dead a short time later. The younger brother was reported in critical condition early Monday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The names of the brothers were not immediately released.
