Feds to explain methane fix

Residents concerned about methane leaks from Mallard Lake landfill can learn about plans to remove escaped underground gas Wednesday.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will host public meetings at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the Hanover Park Village Hall, 2121 W. Lake St., Hanover Park.

The EPA has tested 243 homes since last November when it was revealed that methane was leaking from the landfill, which is located at DuPage County's Mallard Lake Forest Preserve, near Gary Avenue and Schick Road. No gas has showed up in residents' homes.

Trace amounts of other chemicals, linked to landfills, were detected in some residences west of Mallard Lake this year. T

he EPA will explain plans to install a gas extraction system near the landfill to suck out vapors that escape its borders.

The landfill has a history of pollution problems.
