Mom gets year in jail for deadly underage party

PONTIAC _ A central Illinois mother has been sentenced to a year in jail for charges related to an underage drinking party that left a teen dead.

Before her sentencing Tuesday, 51-year-old Anne Haugen of Chenoa fought back tears as she said buying a keg of beer for her teenage daughter's party was "a stupid mistake."

During the party, a group of teens, including 16-year-old Travis Steidinger, fled when they thought police were approaching.

Steidinger, who was wasn't wearing a coat or shoes, was found dead of hypothermia in a field three miles away.

Haugen was convicted in August of unlawful delivery of alcohol to a minor. A felony charge of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile was dismissed.
