Man arrested in connection with robbery of Sugar Grove credit union

FBI officials say they have arrested the man who robbed Oak Trust Credit Union in Sugar Grove earlier this month.

Danny R. Grote, 32, whose last known address was in the 400 block of Landmark Avenue in Yorkville, was arrested Friday in connection with the Oct. 8 robbery.

"It was very good police work," said Ross Rice, special agent and spokesman for the FBI, who said bank employees and customers were able to provide Sugar Grove police with a description of the suspect and the vehicle, including the make and model.

Grote was arrested without incident by FBI Special Agents and officers from the Downers Grove Police Department at the Duellman Motel in Downers Grove, where he was staying. The announcement of his arrest was made Wednesday by the FBI and the Downers Grove and Sugar Grove police departments.

Grote was charged in a criminal complaint filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one count of bank robbery, which is a felony offense. According to the complaint, Grote entered the credit union at approximately 9:30 a.m. and approached a teller, handing her a note announcing a robbery and demanding money. The note implied that Grote was armed but no weapon was displayed and no injuries were reported.

After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, Grote fled the bank, making his escape in an early 1990s model, Chevrolet S-series pickup, according to police. The license plate number was not observed.

The FBI developed a flyer that was circulated among local police departments. A Downers Grove police officer had stopped a vehicle for a traffic offense that matched the description in the flyer, and the Lisle office of the FBI was alerted. They then traced Grote to the Downers Grove hotel.

Grote appeared in U.S. District Court in Chicago Tuesday and was formally charged. He was ordered held without bond, pending his next scheduled court appearance, and is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago.

If convicted of the charge filed against him, Grote faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years incarceration.
