Judges shouldn't take lawyer money

I am writing to express my concern over the bias of our judicial system.

On Nov. 4, we will not just be voting for a new president, senator or congressman. We will also be voting for judges. While they may share a ballot with other politicians, we hold judges to a higher standard. They render decisions that can directly affect every member of our community. We trust that the people who decide our guilt or innocence are fair and impartial. When we stand before a judge, we hope that they will consider only the facts of a case.

Yet the law allows judicial campaigns to accept contributions directly from lawyers, the same lawyers who will stand before them, once elected, in a court of law. This practice calls into question the impartiality of our judges, something that should be beyond reproach.

I hope that our legislators will soon fix judicial election laws so that the partiality of our courts is no longer questioned.  In the meantime, we have the option to choose a judge who will not accept these contributions.  We can elect John Noverini to circuit court judge.
