Briefs: Man struck by van ID'd

A man struck and killed while trying to cross Lee Street in Des Plaines late Wednesdsay has been identified as 57-year-old George Peterson of Des Plaines. As of late Thursday, no charges had been filed against the driver of a minivan that police say struck Peterson as he tried to cross the street on foot in heavy traffic. Police said Peterson apparently wasn't in a crosswalk when he was hit by the minivan, whose driver stopped and called for help. Peterson died later at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.

Long Grove conducts test call

Long Grove has scheduled a test call at 6 p.m. today for residents who've signed up for notifications through the Connect-CTY service. The village will use the service to communicate with residents regarding time-sensitive incidents like public safety matters. The service allows officials to send the alerts through a phone call or text message. Residential and business phones available through public record will automatically be included in the system. Residents can also add their personal information, with up to three phone numbers and two e-mail addresses, at longgrove.net. Anyone with questions can call (847) 634-9440.

Rosemont hosts Hobby Expo

Michael Gross, actor and avid model railroader, will headline the International Hobby Expo, to be held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 and Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. Admission is $10 adults and children 10 and up; $8 for seniors 65 and older; younger children are free. The Hobby Manufacturers Association, the show's sponsors, says more than 25,000 people visit annually. There will be more than 700 booths from around the world and the show has the largest variety of model and radio-controlled hobbies in one building. Gross, probably best known for his work on the TV series "Family Ties," will be there Saturday, meeting the public and signing autographs. Show details are at GiantShow.com.
