Chicago parks earns money from music fest

The Chicago Park District has earned $1.6 million from this year's Lollapalooza rock 'n' roll festival.

The park district's take for this summer's Grant Park festival is about $400,000 more than last year's revenues. Parks Superintendent Timothy Mitchell said Tuesday the festival sold out on two of three days, drawing a reported 225,000.

Brenda Palm of the Parkways Foundation, a fundraising partner of the Park District, said funds from this year's Lollapalooza will help pay for a new soccer field at McKinley Park, Buckingham Fountain restoration and summer camps for special-needs youths, among other efforts.

Under the contract, promoters picked up costs to repair any damage to trees and bushes on park land and reimbursed the city for police protection.
