Police still investigating death of pedestrian in Elgin

The Elgin Police Department continues to investigate how a 28-year-old man was struck and killed by a minivan.

Javier A. Alvarado was hit at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday by a 43-year-old woman driving a 2004 Toyota Sienna minivan west on South Street as he crossed at Nautical Way, just two blocks from his home at 2364 South St., police said. He was later pronounced dead at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin.

Police spokeswoman Ann Dinges said the traffic unit is investigating and no charges have been filed against the driver, who was not injured.

"This is still under investigation," she said. "He was on foot and it appears he was crossing from the south side of the street to the north side of the street and he was wearing dark clothing. The rest of it, as far as what he was doing, they're still investigating."

The Kane County Coroner's Office said an autopsy showed the preliminary case of death to be blunt head and neck trauma. An inquest will be held in six to eight weeks.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at the O'Connor Leetz Funeral Home, 364 Division St., Elgin. A funeral mass will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at St. Monica's Catholic Church, 90 N. Kennedy Drive (Route 25), Carpentersville.
