Police supt. proposes department changes

Changes appear to be coming at the Chicago Police Department at a time when murder and other crimes are rising.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports Superintendent Jody Weis, who took office early this year, wants to create two assistant superintendents who report directly to him. One would be in charge of administration and the other would run the departmentÂ's operations.

With the changes, the current first deputy superintendent who has traditionally run the department from day to day would become the assistant superintendent of operations.

In another major change, the department would eliminate the department that oversees several units, including the new Mobile Strike Force, and place them under a new administration.
