Got bulbs? Geneva will take them
Gardeners, are you digging up, splitting and rearranging spring-blooming bulbs in your yard?
The Geneva Beautification Committee would be glad to take any spares off your hands.
It will have a Spring Bulb Drop-Off from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Geneva Public Works Department, 1800 South St. Daffodils, jonquils, tulips, hyacinths, crocuses and other spring bulbs and corms will be planted in public gardens throughout the downtown area.
"Fall is a very good time to split any bulbs you may have," said committee member Sherri Weitl. Bulbs form daughter bulbs as they store energy over the summer. The plants thrive, however, when each bulb has some elbow room.
The committee usually doesn't buy bulbs. "Bulbs are very expensive," Weitl said. The committee relies on donations of plants and cash.
People can also donate store-bought bulbs.
On Nov. 1, the volunteers will plant the bulbs, after they clean out the garden beds for the season.
"It's just going to be fun to see what comes up in the spring," Weitl said.
The committee will also have bundles of firewood for sale, for $5.
The committee of volunteers plants and maintain about 50 sites. To join the effort, visit plantgeneva.org or call Weitl at (630) 584-5762 or (630) 232-7494.
Another Geneva organization is looking for gardening help, too.
The PTO at Heartland Elementary School wants any perennial plants that you are splitting. Call Kim Kane at (630) 208-8127.
