Ghost walk tours in Geneva
Think all those things that go bump in the night are only in your imagination? They may be more real than you believed.
The Geneva History Center will be guiding the brave through several Ghost Walk Tours starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25. Through multiple ghost stories handed down for over a century, thrill-seeking travelers will get to know a different side of the town they call home.
"Many of the stories we'll tell have been passed down through generations," said David Oberg, executive director of the History Center. "Some of the stories are pretty benign, but others will make you sleep with one eye open!"
During the 75-minute tour, participants will be guided through the neighborhoods of Geneva, hearing eerie tales of past residents. Mysteries such as why an old music teacher's piano can still be heard playing and what happened to some of the patients in Geneva's first hospital will all be discussed.
To help spread the spooky vibe, Donna Latham, author of the book "Ghosts of the Fox River Valley" will be on hand to help lead tours and tell stories at the museum.
The Geneva History Center debuted the Ghost Walks last year to an overwhelming response. This year, they have added three recently discovered stories and an additional tour time to help accommodate those looking for a fright.
Though many of the legends skew toward the very scary, Oberg insists this is an activity for the whole family to enjoy.
"I'll gauge the scariness based on who is in my group," said Oberg. "Those who want the scariest versions of the tales can hear them afterward."
Throughout the year, the museum hosts over 30 events that celebrate Geneva's roots. Some of the biggest events include the unveiling of the Christmas tree and nativity set from Italy, and a Lego train show that uses blocks to recreate the layout of the town.
The tours are always popular, as they are a painless way to learn a bit of local history. On the Ghost Walk, the oldest story on the route dates back to the Civil War and many feature the early settlers of the town.
"It's a chance to explore the darker shadows of Geneva," Oberg said. "Come experience what people have been talking about for generations."
