Home left uninhabitable, pet bird dies in Huntley fire

A family's pet bird died in a fire that left a home uninhabitable Saturday afternoon in Huntley, officials said.

Crews responded at 3:46 p.m. to the 11800 block of Blue Bayou Drive and, upon arrival, found smoke showing from the two-story home, according to a news release from the Huntley Fire Protection District.

The family was able to get out safely before firefighters arrived, thanks to working smoke detectors in the home, the release said.

The fire was under control within 10 minutes; crews were on the scene for another half-hour to ensure the fire was fully extinguished, the release stated. Several pets were rescued, although one pet bird did not survive.

Estimated damages are roughly $225,000, and the home is uninhabitable. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
