U of I conservative research group leaving campus

CHAMPAIGN -- An organization set up at the University of Illinois to foster study of capitalism and limited government is moving off campus just over a year after it opened.

The Academy on Capitalism and Limited Government Fund says it will continue to work off campus to raise money and pay for research and programs.

University Chancellor Richard Herman says the fund's operation wasn't compatible with the university.

The fund opened its doors in September 2007 with a conference on campus that featured speeches by conservatives Steve Forbes and Illinois graduate Robert Novak.

But some faculty complained the fund might create an undue conservative political influence on campus, and that the organization was formed without faculty input.
