Sporting News names Pujols player of year

ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols is Sporting News' 2008 Player of the Year.

A panel of 314 major league players made the selection. Pujols also was voted by his peers as Sporting News' Player of the Year in 2003.

Pujols batted .357 with 37 home runs and 116 RBIs despite playing with a torn ligament in his right elbow.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, quoted in the issue that hits newstands Thursday, calls Pujols a "classic complete player."

Sporting News moved from St. Louis to Charlotte, N.C. this past summer.
