Women in crash were here visiting friend

The young woman killed in a crash Sunday morning in Big Rock, and her passenger, were in the area to visit a friend they knew from college, Kane County Sheriff's police have determined.

And an autopsy Monday by the Kane County coroner determined that Janet Rose Bauernschmitt, 24, of Pennsylvania, died of blunt head and chest trauma. Results of toxicology tests for drugs and alcohol are pending.

Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler said it's not likely any tickets will be issued, as it appears Bauernschmitt was at fault.

Bauernschmitt was driving a Nissan Altima east on Scott Road when it was hit by a southbound Dodge Nitro SUV at Dauberman Road around 9:15 a.m. Sunday. Sheriff's police believe she didn't realize there was only a two-way stop on Scott. The speed limit on Dauberman is 55 mph.

Bauernschmitt and her passenger, 22-year-old Julie A. McQueen of Missouri, were 2008 graduates of Cedarville University, a private Baptist institution in Ohio. Bauernschmitt served on a university summer mission team to the Middle East. McQueen played for the university's basketball team.

McQueen is hospitalized at Advocate Good Samaritan in Downers Grove.
