Celebrate fall 1840s-style at Durant House Museum
The 1843 Durant House Museum will celebrate the abundance of autumn from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5.
Visitors will be able to sample some "antique apples" not normally available in the farm stands or supermarkets. Classic varieties grown in 19th century orchards will provide a tasty treat for 21st-century palates.
Highlights of the program include explanations of the 1840's apple gathering and drying baskets, preparation of delicious apple dishes on the hearth, and sampling of apples and cider. In addition, costumed guides will give tours of the Durant House.
For children, a special menu of activities will appeal to youngsters of all ages. Children will explore the toys and games of an earlier era, hear the famed story of "Johnny Appleseed", take part in husking corn, and compete in a rollicking pumpkin roll.
A donation of $3 per adult and $1 for children over 3 will enable visitors to take part in all the activities.
Located in LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve on Dean Street west of St. Charles, the Durant House Museum is operated by Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley with support from the Kane County Forest Preserve.
