Bond set for Palatine man in beating death
Bond was set at $850,000 today for a Palatine man after battery charges were upgraded to murder in the beating death of William R. Roman in a Rolling Meadows parking lot.
David Greer, 48, 1140 E. Northwest Highway, originally was charged with one count of aggravated battery for the Sept. 23 incident in which he is accused of attacking Roman while the two were in a car with two other men, drinking and looking for tree-trimming jobs.
Authorities said Roman, 43, who spent part of his life in Naperville, had moved out to Arizona for a few years before coming back to the area in mid-September looking for work.
Authorities said the fight rendered Roman unconscious, but Greer and one of the other men in the car drove around for nearly four hours before deciding to take him to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village. Roman was admitted to the hospital and died a week later, police said.
Greer has remained in the Cook County jail on $500,000 bond since his arrest on the battery charges Sept. 26.
