Briefs: Library hosts tax hike meetings

The Huntley Area Public Library is holding two informational meetings on its proposed tax increase before voters head to the polls. The tax increase, which would amount to about $60 a year for the owner of a $250,000 home, would allow the library to issue about $9.5 million in bonds for a 33,000-square-foot addition. The meetings will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 14 and 29 at the library, 11000 Ruth Road. The meetings will end around 8:30 p.m. and include question-and-answer sessions, tours and refreshments. Coffee with mayor

South Elgin's Coffee with the Mayor has been moved up this month to Thursday, Oct. 9. It will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. in the conference room at village hall, 10 N. Water St. Meet Village President Jim Hansen and Village Administrator Larry Jones to discuss what's on your mind regarding village issues.

Calling child geniuses

Parents of third- and sixth- graders who live in Elgin Area School District U-46 boundaries and have not enrolled their kids in public school can have their budding geniuses screened for gifted education anytime from now through Oct. 24. Parents must provide achievement test scores and proof of residency within the school district. South Elgin principal lauded

The Illinois Art Education Association named South Elgin High School Principal Melanie Meidel the 2008 Art Administrator of the Year. This award recognizes the exemplary contributions, service and achievements of one outstanding administrator in the state of Illinois annually. The award will be presented at the IAEA conference in Galena the weekend of Oct. 24.
