In need of verbs used correctly

Being aware of proper verb usage is the responsibility of the reporter and editor. Reporters of the Daily Herald have continually used the incorrect verb of being, such as, is-are, was-were, has-have.

Example: The Wednesday, Sept. 10 edition, concerning the two Dobermans rescued from an abandoned manhole. "The frightened pair were trapped" is incorrect. "The frightened pair was trapped" is correct and should have been used. It is one pair, consisting of two dogs. One is singular, pair is singular. Was is a singular verb of being.

The verbs of being previously mentioned are misused daily in the Daily Herald. Reporters proofread - editors proofread. Let's get it right!
