Blood drive is Friday:
The village of Arlington Heights will sponsor a blood drive with LifeSource Blood Services from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at the Arlington Heights Senior Center, 1801 W. Central Road. To schedule an appointment, call (847) 368-5760. Walk-ins are welcome. Identification is required. You can receive a pre-screening for eligibility by calling LifeSource at (877) 543-3768.
League meets on environment:
A program titled, "Sisters on the Planet," on how climate change is affecting poor communities and women, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16 at the Arlington Heights Historical Society, 110 W. Fremont St. The program, presented by the League of Women Voters Arlington Heights-Mount Prospect-Buffalo Grove Area and Oxfam America, features videos portraying the efforts of four women in poorer communities fighting the effects of climate change. Fashion show is Friday:
The Northwest Community Hospital 2008 Fashion Show and Luncheon, titled "50 Years of Working Together," is Friday, Oct. 17 at the Meadows Club, 2950 Golf Road in Rolling Meadows. Women of the Northwest suburbs have organized the fundraiser since the late 1950s - an era of fancy dresses, pillbox hats and white gloves. These days, guests are more likely to wear pant suits. The golden anniversary fashion show will include a slide show of historical photographs from shows held during the last half-century. The event starts with a 10 a.m. reception, silent auction and holiday boutique. Lunch is served at noon, followed by ZZAZZ Productions' classy show of fall fashions. Tickets are $75. Citizenship workshop coming:
A workshop on how to obtain U.S. citizenship will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at St. Mary's Community Center, 795 Center St. in Des Plaines. It's sponsored by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society Chicago. Rosemont to vote on casino:
The Rosemont Village Board has scheduled a special meeting for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, to vote on Trilliant Gaming Illinois LLC's proposal to build a casino in the town. Tuesday is the deadline for filing applications for the only available casino license with the Illinois Gaming Board. No information on Trilliant's plan was available Friday and Rosemont spokesman Gary Mack said acting Mayor Bradley Stephens doesn't plan to comment ahead of the meeting, which will be at village hall, 9501 Devon Ave. Last week, Des Plaines signed an agreement with Neil Bluhm's Midwest Gaming & Entertainment LLC for a casino in that city.
