Briefs: Naperville murder trial continues
Prosecutors may rest today in the case of a former Naperville father accused of the Sept. 4, 2004, beating death of his 7-month-old daughter on the city's far northwest side. Locksley O. Creary, 30, of Bolingbrook, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges. His defense team begins its side of the case next week. It's unclear if Creary will testify. The prosecution maintains Creary inflicted traumatic blunt-force injuries, including a lacerated liver, while watching Ariana alone. His lawyers argue the medical evidence is uncertain and it's possible the baby suffered an existing medical problem and then was accidentally injured when Creary administered improper CPR to resuscitate his daughter.

Villa Park library open house
An open house will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, on Villa Park library's plan to ask voters for a property tax increase to construct and operate a new $25 million building. Architects will be on hand to explain the proposed 48,000-square-foot building project. Library tours also will be offered to provide a behind-the-scenes view of facility operations and explain the need for a new facility. The library is asking voters to approve two measures on Nov. 4. The first seeks permission to borrow $24.9 million for a new building. The second measure seeks to increase the property tax rate by 8 cents per $100 equalized assessed value to operate the larger building.
Carol Stream earns arts award
Carol Stream received one of 15 honorable mentions in the 2008 Illinois Arts Friendly Community Awards, presented by the Illinois Arts Alliance and the Illinois Municipal League. Carol Stream's Culture Counts! Festival, now in its sixth year, is one reason the village got an "arts friendly" designation. Other DuPage communities that received honorable mentions are Aurora, Bartlett and Lombard. For more details, visit artsalliance.org/artsfriendly.
Garage restrictions proposed:
Lombard officials are eyeing changes to building regulations that would prevent garages from being the dominant architectural feature of new homes. The proposed rules would require the garage door or doors be no more than 42 percent of the front facade of a house. A maximum square footage also would apply to prevent oversize garages with doors perpendicular to the street. A final vote on the measures is expected at the next board meeting.
