There ought to be a couple of laws
Some months back, Congressman Peter Roskam invited constituents to submit suggestions for possible new laws.
I submitted two. Whether he thought these laws were worthy of consideration, I don't know. I believe, though, the average citizen would agree with me. So here they are:
My first suggestion is for a law that makes it illegal for lobbyists in Washington and their employers to make contributions to any member of either of house of Congress, any political party or anyone running for office.
Further, it should make it illegal to offer gifts, dinners, golf outings and junkets to any elected official or candidate for elected office.
After all, these are the same people to whom they are soliciting favors. And, of course, it should make it illegal for these elected officials to accept the same. Until this happens, elected officials will never truly represent the average citizen.
My second suggestion is to not allow any attachments to a bill that has nothing to do with the bill itself and even then, it should not be done without discussion and not without public disclosure.
Making these suggestions into laws would be a major step toward government accountability.
