Two students injured in accident at Lakes High School

At least two students were injured Wednesday morning in a two-car accident outside of Lakes High School in Lake Villa.

The crash involved four high school students and happened at about 7:30 a.m., said Lake Villa Deputy Police Chief Roger Schroeder.

He said a 2000 Infinity driven by one of the teens was facing eastbound on Grass Lake Road and attempting to make a left turn into the high school when a Ford Taurus heading westbound ran into it.

He said the driver of the Taurus sped up to make it through the intersection of Grass Lake Road and Deep Lake Road to beat the traffic signal that was turning from yellow to red.

"High school traffic can get pretty heavy in the morning and there is an officer up there to control traffic," he said. "But, sometimes, students are running late, are in a hurry and things like this happen."

He said three of the four students involved in the accident are from Lakes High School, and that the fourth is a student at Antioch High School.

Two of the students were transported from the scene to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with undisclosed nonlife threatening injuries. He added the other two students were released into the care of their parents.

He said no citations have been issued in the accident but that officers are still investigating.
